How often should I flush my water heater tank?

Once a year is the widely published rule of thumb for most homes. With hard water or popping and rumbling noises from the tank, flush every six months instead. Regular flushing clears sediment off the bottom so the burner or elements heat efficiently, which can extend the tank's service life.
